A castle inside the fortress

The Château Comtal was the Trencavel viscounts' own seat, begun around 1130 and remodelled into a fortress between 1228 and 1239, after the Albigensian Crusade brought the cité under royal control. It sits apart from the rest of the cité behind its own moat and barbican — a fortress within the fortress.

The Musée Lapidaire

Inside the château, the lapidary museum displays medieval carved stone and sculpture — a close look at the kind of work the cité's walls and churches were built from.

Where the ramparts walk begins

The walk along the inner rampart starts from the château and, since September 2024, runs the full circuit of the inner wall — about 1,500 metres. It's the one place in the cité where you're up on the walls themselves rather than looking at them from the street, and two intermediate exits let you cut it short.

What to expect underfoot

Stone floors worn smooth by centuries of use, uneven steps, and sections with no lift access. It rewards comfortable shoes more than most museum visits do.
